Work from the artist Mark Weaver, one of my new design inspirations. He has an amazing knack for color and typography, and his exploration of space and time make for really interesting commentary on our cultural past and how it relates to the future. Definitely worth a look, take a peek here.
I recently received an email (thanks Bob!) about this campaign and thought it was definitely blog-worthy. The World Food Programme has released a very powerful statement: for the first time in history, the number of hungry people worldwide will exceed one billion. So, naturally, they are calling people to action. Their Billion4Billion campaign revolves around the use of Social Networking tools to get the word out about the overwhelming hunger issue. Powerful stuff…

For all of those who came, we want to extend a huge thank you. We appreciate your enthusiasm, commitment, and are just plain proud to know ya. You all get us excited about our role as designers in the community.
For those of you new to Idea Incubator, Hatchet Design hosted the first Incubation period last Friday after work. There was beer and pizza (fuel), and a flurry of ideas. The goal was to throw around any and all ideas, big and small, that may lead to future projects.
I love typography, but I’m not just saying that because I’m a designer and there’s that stereotype demanding that all designers love type, make bad jokes about kerning, and scoff at papyrus and comic sans (well, that last one is absolutely true).
There are some sweet typefaces out there– but some are so gorgeous, so flawless, so perfect that there are no words to describe their perfection (so I’m forced to make one up, and I’m going to do so right now .. scrumtrulescent). I’m not saying I have a problem, but, they cause me to compulsively stand up and shout “yes, thank you Lord” like I’m in a New Orleans church on a hot summer sunday morning.

After much testing and usage debate, the Hatchet Blog is reinvented! Well not really, but it has been improved. First off, authors now have a picture identifying them. So now you can find your favorite lumber-person in a flash! Other updates include:
Also, we have a guest blogger added to the roster! Some furry, woodland critter has joined the crew. For a woodland critter they sure seem to know a lot about type and design… Regardless! The Hatchet Blog plows forward into the forest of knowledge and sharing with relentless, unrelenting, stubborn, blog-force!

We wanted to show the universe our beautiful, and highly thoughtful, open house gift from some of my oldest friends, John and Jennifer. Actually, John has been a friend of my Dad’s since they were in the 4th grade. In support of our venture, these old friends gave us 10 Pantone mugs; and how did they know that these are two of the most essential must-haves of all designer must-haves? I have no idea, but caffeine and the Pantone Color libraries are our best friends. So we made this card for them as a thank you, and if you couldn’t tell we had a lot of fun. Our inspiration came from the colors, the starred ones are our favorites.

While I was at the University of Florida, I had the opportunity of working with Graphic Design Associate Professor Maria Rogal and 9 other students on a real-world project based in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Our MINT class, an elite interactive design studio of 10, traveled there in February 2009 and got to meet some truly amazing people. Our mission was to learn as much as we could from them and apply what we learned about their culture to figure out a way we could step in and make a difference.
