lease check out these awesome, gorgeous drop caps supplied by Jessica Hische. She does a new one each day and is almost finished with the alphabet. Here’s hoping she continues on with numbers and symbols afterward! (I cheated and tried to come up with a post that started with “P” so I could use it cause its my favorite…)

She supplies instructions on her drop cap blog with links included – here: Daily Drop Cap

Less is more, even for Walmart

Until recently, I too have fallen victim to blaming faceless monster corporations for many evils in this world, especially in regards to sustainability. But lately, I’ve come to find out that many of them are making huge strides towards becoming more eco-friendly. Walmart, for example, is striving to use renewable energy and is now the “largest private producer of solar power in the United States”, according to Good Magazine. I know, I couldn’t believe it either. They are making a push towards all Energy Star appliances, and are in the process of making a scorecard to test the sustainability of their suppliers, which has now become an example for other corporations. AND, Walmart was the sole carrier of HP’s recently released laptop that came packaged in an over the shoulder sling bag, eliminating waste completely. Sorry PC Hipsters, they’ve already sold out.

Barack Obama Shepard Fairey 'Hope' Poster

Photo courtesy of the Associated Press

Infringement of copyright? Misappropration? Ew, sounds messy. Remember that whole controversy with the Obama Hope poster that Shepard Fairey so skillfully released to the world, and how the Associated Press claimed he copied a photo of  theirs to make it? Well, last Friday the artist called himself out on using a photo from the Associated Press and then going back and trying to cover his dirty little tracks. He even made fake stencils to convince the law that he didn’t copy the AP photo. Not cool. As designers, we have to be able to at least admit our mistakes. I mean, I’m all for free expression, but lying to the courtroom is a whole ‘nother can of worms. Although he’s a photo bandit, and more recently a liar, we still have mad respect for the man.  View the NY Times article

This is too exciting…

Hatchet Design LLC is so proud of the eldest younger brother of Lady Lumberchick, Jesse John, for encouraging friends, unity, community, and knightship at UCF. Check out this super awesome write-up in the school newspaper about the club, CFFY!, and what they’re doing to promote joy and goodwill. I mean really… they say they’re “overstocked on hugs and high-fives…our storage fees are way over our heads. Please come today for your free love.” Free love? I’m there. Check out the article here

Yahoo! We finally got our blog going and we couldn’t be more excited! As much as we love updating the Facebook and Twitter, there’s something about creating a space just for Hatchet posts that is totally rad. We hope you find yourself a regular and never a stranger.
